The news picture is a never ending story. Every day we wake up and receive news about events happening nationally and internationally. One of the political events that happened in the late 2010’s was Brexit and the Catalan independence movement. Brexit was a major move for the whole of Europe, and the discourse was an everyday matter. VG, as Norways most popular news platform, was on the constantly, informing their readers about the process.

As the competition within new outlets grow stronger, it is important to be the best and to stay relevant for the consumers. News outlets always strive to be the first to reveal something, or
inform about current events/breaking news. It is important to remind the target group that this is VG’s goal.
But it is also equally important how we conduct and report news. Stories that captivate people and make them understand the perspectives. As a way to prove a point, and communicate something that is relevant, making an alternate universe can create a position where no other news outlets have had the opportunity to cover it.
That is why we, in collaboration with VG, have made the campaign ‘Berxit’. Berxit is based on the political turbulence of Brexit, and focuses on how Bergen, Norways second largest city, wants to become an independent state. The campaign reflects how VG in reality would cover this (massive) story, through news broadcasts, shows, interviews, reporters on site, print etc. The campaign creates an alternate universe set in real life, while reflecting the on-going jokes that Bergen, some day, may want to become more independent.
